After five POWs escape their captors by hot air balloon, they crash land on an island in the South Pacific. Cyrus was lost at sea, so Neb sets off to find him. He is found in a cave, unaware of how he got there. Top, his dog, alerts others to take the injured Cyrus to the shelter. Later, when the settlers are eating peccary, Pencroff bites into a lead pellet, a strange thing to find on an island with no guns. The settlers decide it must mean new occupants. They decide to build a canoe and while out, they find a chest filled with equipment including kitchen utensils, hatchets, rifles, gunpowder, binoculars, compasses, clothing, and more. When the settlers return home, they find the island overrun by apes. The apes take fright and evacuate with the castaways' ladder. In reclaiming the ladder, the settlers find that an ape is left behind. They agree the ape will remain a member of their colony, naming him Jupiter Joop.
